What it means

Ink System Failure is HP’s message for a fault somewhere in the ink path: the print head, the cartridges, or the parts that carry ink between them. It usually comes with a code starting 0x that identifies the area reporting the fault; the codes vary by model. A good share of these clear after a full power reset and reseating the cartridges and print head. When the same code keeps returning, the print head or ink delivery hardware usually needs replacing.

When you’ll see it

  • Immediately after turning the printer on
  • After replacing one or more cartridges
  • After the printer was moved, tilted or shipped
  • After printing with a cartridge that had run very low
  • After a power cut, or the printer was unplugged while on

Usually caused by

  • Most commonA temporary electronic fault that a full power reset clears
  • Most commonA cartridge or the print head not seated properly
  • SometimesAn empty, damaged or incompatible cartridge
  • SometimesAir or dried ink in the head after a move or long disuse
  • SometimesA failed print head or ink delivery part

How to clear it

  1. Write down the full error code

Copy the code shown with the message exactly, including every character after 0x. It identifies the failing area for HP’s support, and it tells you later whether the same fault came back.

  2. Do a full power reset

With the printer switched on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer, then from the wall. Wait 60 seconds, plug it straight into a wall outlet rather than a power strip, reconnect it to the printer, and turn it on if it doesn’t start by itself.

You should see: The printer runs a longer startup than usual; if it reaches the home screen without the message, move on to the test page at the end.

  3. Check every cartridge slot

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop. Make sure every slot holds a cartridge and none shows as empty; many HP printers stop completely if any one color is missing or out.

  4. Reseat each cartridge one at a time

Release each cartridge, lift it out, check that no protective tape remains on it, and push it back until it clicks. Replace any cartridge that’s empty, damaged or not made for your model.

  5. Reseat the print head if your model has one

Many OfficeJet Pro and similar models have a separate print head held by a latch in the carriage. With the carriage stopped, lift the latch, lift the head out by its sides without touching the copper contacts or nozzles, set it straight back in and press the latch down firmly. Your manual shows whether your model has a removable head.

  6. Update the printer firmware

Once the printer reaches its home screen, check for a firmware update through the printer’s own menu, the HP Smart app, or the download page for your model on HP’s official support site. Don’t turn the printer off while an update installs.

  7. Print a diagnostic page

Print a print quality report or similar diagnostic page from the printer’s reports or tools menu.

You should see: Clean, solid blocks of color mean the ink system is working; missing colors point to a head that needs cleaning or replacing.

Common questions

Can non-HP cartridges cause Ink System Failure?

They can, if a cartridge is faulty or not read properly. If the error appeared right after you fitted a new cartridge, try a different one, ideally genuine, to rule it out.

Will a print head cleaning fix it?

Cleaning helps with clogged nozzles, which show up as poor print quality. While Ink System Failure is on screen the printer usually won’t run a cleaning, so start with the power reset and reseating.

Does the code after the message matter?

Yes. Different codes point to different parts of the ink system. Keep a note of it, and if the same code survives every step here, quote it when you contact HP’s official support.
